Interior plastering is the application of a smooth, level finish to internal walls and ceilings. It creates the surface you paint, wallpaper, or tile onto — and its quality determines how your finished room looks and feels for years to come.
You need professional plastering if you're building an extension, converting a loft, renovating a period property, repairing damaged walls, or simply preparing surfaces for redecoration. DIY plastering almost always results in visible imperfections — ridges, hollows, and trowel marks that no amount of paint can disguise.
At Judge Plastering Contractors, we specialise in delivering level-5 smooth finishes across residential properties in London and the Home Counties. Whether it's a single feature wall or an entire house, we treat every surface with the same precision — because you'll be looking at it every day.
Our clients include homeowners undertaking renovations, landlords preparing rental properties, and developers finishing new-build homes. We work on Victorian terraces, 1930s semis, modern apartments, and listed buildings — each with its own challenges, and each requiring a plasterer who understands the substrate they're working on.
Bad plastering is one of the most common complaints in UK construction. It shows up as bumpy walls, cracking finishes, and corners that aren't square. Once painted, every imperfection is amplified — especially under side lighting. Fixing poor plastering costs more than doing it correctly in the first place.
Leaving damaged plaster unrepaired creates deeper problems. Hairline cracks widen over time, allowing moisture to penetrate. In older properties, blown plaster separates from the wall behind it, creating hollow patches that eventually collapse. What starts as a cosmetic issue becomes a structural repair.
Many homeowners make the mistake of patching damaged plaster with filler or re-painting over cracks. This covers the symptom, not the cause. Within months, the same cracks reappear — often worse than before. Professional re-plastering addresses the root cause: a surface that has failed and needs to be replaced or re-skimmed to a proper standard.
Another common mistake is hiring general builders or handymen for plastering work. Plastering is a specialist trade that takes years to master. A qualified plasterer works faster, wastes less material, and delivers a finish that a generalist simply cannot match. The cost difference is marginal — but the quality difference is enormous.
We visit your property, assess the surfaces, identify any preparation needed, and provide a clear, itemised quote — typically the same day.
Old wallpaper, flaking paint, and loose plaster are removed. Cracks are raked out and filled. Surfaces are treated with PVA or bonding agent to ensure the new plaster keys correctly.
We apply British Gypsum multi-finish or bonding coat plaster in controlled conditions. Two coats are standard — a base coat for structure, and a finishing coat trowelled to a smooth, flat surface.
Every wall and ceiling is checked for flatness using straight edges and side-lighting. We correct any imperfections before the plaster sets — not after.
Dust sheets collected, debris removed, and surfaces left ready for decoration within 3–5 days of drying. We walk you through the finished result and confirm you're satisfied before we leave.

Skim coating is the most common interior plastering method. It involves applying a thin (2–3mm) layer of finishing plaster over existing plasterboard or a prepared base coat. We use British Gypsum Multi-Finish as standard — a gypsum-based plaster that provides excellent workability and a smooth, hard-wearing surface. Skim coating is ideal for new plasterboard installations, re-plastering over old surfaces, and preparing walls for high-end decoration.
Where walls are uneven, damaged, or built from irregular substrates (brick, block, stone), we apply an undercoat plaster first. Bonding coat plaster is designed to adhere to low-suction surfaces and provide a flat, level base for the finishing coat. For high-suction substrates like aerated blocks, we use Hardwall or Browning plaster instead. The choice of undercoat depends on the substrate — and getting it wrong leads to cracking, debonding, and surface failure.
New build plastering involves finishing freshly installed plasterboard or blockwork walls from scratch. This includes taping and filling plasterboard joints, applying corner beads to external angles, and skimming all surfaces to a level-5 finish. We work with developers and self-builders across London to deliver consistent, paintable finishes on schedule — because delays in plastering hold up every trade that follows.
Plaster repairs range from filling isolated cracks to re-plastering entire walls where the original finish has blown (separated from the substrate). We remove all loose and damaged material, prepare the exposed surface, and re-plaster to match the surrounding finish. On period properties, we take extra care to feather new plaster into existing surfaces so the repair is invisible once decorated.
Ceiling plastering demands a higher level of skill than wall plastering — gravity works against you, and imperfections are more visible under overhead lighting. We plaster ceilings using the same multi-finish system as walls, working from scaffold boards or stilts depending on ceiling height. For lath-and-plaster ceilings in older properties, we can overboard with plasterboard and skim, or replaster directly onto new lath where heritage requirements dictate.
Residential plastering prioritises finish quality — homeowners live with the result daily, so every surface must be flawless under close inspection. Commercial plastering often prioritises speed and coverage, with lower finish standards acceptable for offices, retail units, and warehouses. At Judge Plastering, our focus is residential — where quality matters most and shortcuts are noticed immediately.
We use British Gypsum products as standard: Multi-Finish for skim coats, Bonding Coat for undercoats, Hardwall for high-suction backgrounds, and Thistle Board Finish for plasterboard surfaces. For specialised applications, we use Knauf MP75 machine-applied plaster on larger projects. All materials are stored correctly and used within their shelf life — expired plaster is the most common cause of finish failure, and we never risk it.
We serve homeowners across London, Brentford, Reading, Kingston, and the surrounding areas. For related services, see our rendering, dry lining, and ceilings pages.
